Occupational Therapy Services

Helping Students Develop Essential Life Skills

At MindBridge Solutions, our occupational therapists (OTs) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) help students improve their motor, sensory, and self-care skills to function successfully in school and daily life.

Our Occupational Therapy Services Include:

Fine & Gross Motor Skill Development

Occupational therapy helps students improve their fine and gross motor skills, which are essential for school-related activities such as:

  • Fine Motor Skills – These involve precise hand movements needed for tasks such as:
  • Handwriting and pencil grip
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Manipulating buttons, zippers, and fasteners
  • Using classroom tools (glue sticks, rulers, erasers, etc.)
  • Typing on a computer or using a tablet
  • Gross Motor Skills – These involve larger body movements that contribute to:
  • Postural control and sitting upright in a chair for extended periods
  • Balancing and coordination for playground activities or physical education
  • Navigating hallways and stairs safely
  • Carrying books, backpacks, and school materials efficiently

By improving motor coordination, strength, and endurance, occupational therapy helps students participate more fully in classroom and school activities.

Sensory Integration Therapy

Some students experience sensory processing difficulties, which means they may be overly sensitive to stimuli (e.g., loud noises, bright lights, certain textures) or may not respond to sensory input appropriately. These challenges can significantly impact their ability to focus, engage, and regulate emotions in school.

OTs use sensory integration therapy to help students:

  • Tolerate and process sensory input more effectively
  • Improve attention and self-regulation in the classroom
  • Reduce sensory-seeking or sensory-avoidant behaviors (e.g., covering ears, avoiding touch, excessive movement)
  • Enhance participation in structured and unstructured activities (e.g., assemblies, recess, lunchroom settings)

Interventions may include sensory breaks, weighted tools, fidget devices, alternative seating (e.g., wobble chairs, therapy balls), and structured movement activities to help students stay engaged and focused.

Adaptive & Functional Skill Training

In the school setting, occupational therapy supports students in developing self-care and independent living skills that promote autonomy and confidence. These include:

  • Dressing skills (buttoning, zipping, tying shoes) for school activities such as changing for PE or wearing appropriate seasonal clothing
  • Feeding skills (using utensils, opening food packaging, self-feeding) for school lunch and snack times
  • Personal hygiene (washing hands, managing bathroom routines, using tissues properly)
  • Organizational skills (keeping track of school supplies, using lockers, managing personal belongings)

Students with physical or developmental challenges may struggle with these tasks, and OT provides strategies, modifications, and practice opportunities to increase independence in daily school routines.
