What Is a Multidisciplinary Evaluation?

A multidisciplinary evaluation (MDE) involves two or more specialists working together to assess different areas of a student’s functioning. This approach is often used when:

A student presents with complex learning, communication, or behavioral concerns

Multiple areas of suspected disability need to be evaluated at the same time

A more comprehensive view is needed to determine special education eligibility

MDEs ensure that all relevant areas of development are evaluated thoroughly—and that recommendations are cohesive, individualized, and effective.

What’s Included in a Multidisciplinary Evaluation?

Depending on the student’s needs, a multidisciplinary team may include:

An educational diagnostician, who evaluates academic performance, cognitive processing, and learning disability indicators
A school psychologist, who assesses behavior, mental health, and emotional development
A speech-language pathologist (SLP), who evaluates language development, articulation, and pragmatic communication
An occupational therapist (OT), who assesses fine motor skills, sensory processing, and functional independence

Each professional contributes their portion of the evaluation and collaborates to develop a shared report with actionable recommendations.
