An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an evaluation performed by a qualified professional not employed by the school district. Parents may request an IEE at public expense when they disagree with a school-conducted evaluation.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), parents have the right to request an IEE at public expense when they disagree with a district’s evaluation. If the district agrees or fails to prove their evaluation is appropriate, they must fund the IEE.
Districts can also choose to fund an IEE proactively, especially in complex cases or when an outside opinion is needed.
